System Configuration

The ESKORT Compliance Solution is a highly flexible solution in the sense that it is easily adaptable to exactly fit a wide range of different needs.  Individual customer solutions are actually based on the ESKORT Compliance Platform, which is a configurable set of applications and modules supported by a comprehensive configuration tool, ESKORT Designer. These applications and modules are combined, configured and where necessary customized to meet each customer’s individual needs in the identified compliance area. In recognition of the fact that there is a substantial degree of commonality of need across the different taxation authorities, a number of ESKORT Standard Systems, representing the main compliance needs have already been configured from the ESKORT Compliance Platform, and can be used as the starting point for a customer’s ESKORT Compliance Project. Examples of ESKORT Standard Systems include: In addition to the above standard systems, the applications and modules of the ESKORT Compliance Platform can be combined in other ways to meet a wide variety of other compliance-related requirements. The list below identifies a number of such special solutions:

  • The first level, system design, involves the identification of the applications and modules that are required in the solution - some components support the inclusion of optional modules dependent on the intended usage of the application. The system design will cover identification of any such modules and applications that are required in the solution and a description of the customization necessary for any of the applications/modules. If a customer’s needs are sufficiently represented by one of the ESKORT Standard Systems then the choice of standard system determines the applications and modules of the ESKORT Compliance Platform that are chosen.
  • The second level, application design, involves configuration of the actual contents of the applications as required to reflect the business situation of the end-users. As with most automated systems, the environments in which compliance solutions operate have a tendency to change. This is certainly true in the world of revenue compliance. Revised or new laws, rulings, changing taxation and duty rates, revised internal policies; changing knowledge and experience of the staff, etc., all affect the solutions that have been developed to support the organization. Therefore, it is necessary that the domain (or knowledge) content of the various ESKORT Systems can easily be configured and maintained. In response to customer request, it is the strategy of Intrasoft International Scandinavia that the configuration process takes place in close co-operation with the customer, and should gradually be able to be taken over by the customer organization, with decreasing assistance from the vendor.
  • The third level, development of bespoke, plug-in functionality, takes the flexibility of the ESKORT Compliance Solution even further than is achievable by through the first two levels of configuration. Through utilization of a modern component-based architecture, ESKORT allows for plug-ins to be developed in a variety of tools such as Visual Basic, Java or C++ and seamlessly plugged into the applications

To support level 2 configuration work (and subsequent maintenance of the customer solution), the ESKORT Compliance Platform offers a generic workbench - ESKORT Designer. ESKORT Designer is a set of design tools intended for use by staff without specialist IT-skills. ESKORT Designer provides the means for defining, testing, releasing and maintaining (under version control) all of the configuration information required by the applications making up a customer solution. This configuration information is contained in the ESKORT Configuration Archive, which is an XML data store that holds the configuration documents used by the various ESKORT applications. Consequently ESKORT Designer is an integral part of any customer solution.

ESKORT Designer is, itself, configured to include the configuration functionality relevant for the applications and modules that will be part of the solution in question. ESKORT Designer supports editing of structured information stored in XML (Extensible Markup Language), which is the emerging standard for representation and communication of structured data. The XML standards are managed by the World Wide Web consortium, and supported by major software vendors.

Configuration of an ESKORT System takes place at three levels:
